Public Health and Care Research Leadership Programme to offer second edition

Being a leader in the field of public health and care research requires more than being a good leader, and it requires more than being a good scientist. It requires a combination where you have competences concerning content, but also knowledge, skills and tools to understand and manage the context. The Public Health and Care Research Leadership Programme was designed to support future leaders in the field of public health and care research to become excellent leaders with a mission.

During a two-year learning journey, participants will engage in educational modules, individual coaching sessions, mutual learning groups, and build their own Leadership Development Portfolio.

International alliance

UMIO proudly partners with The Netherlands School of Public Health and Care Research (CaRe), Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences (NIHES) at Erasmus MC, and Cambridge Institute of Public Health (CIPH) at the University of Cambridge to offer a second edition of the Public Health and Care Research Leadership Programme, with the next cohort starting in July 2022.

Those interested in becoming a leading researcher in the public health and care research domain can send in their application.

UMIO and EHA start training programme for future leaders in cardiovascular medicine

UMIO and the European Heart Academy (EHA) have joined forces in developing a training programme for future leaders in cardiovascular medicine. The programme will start in April 2022.

Certificate of Advanced Studies in Cardiovascular Management and Leadership

The Certificate of Advanced Studies in Cardiovascular Management and Leadership (CAS-Leadership) will provide healthcare practitioners with the skills required to lead and manage the healthcare systems of the future. In contrast to the many generic leadership courses on offer across Europe, CAS-Leadership combines the core principles of effective leadership with instruction in essential modern skills such as hospital management, digital transformation, and dealing with complex systems. This leadership course is a transversal programme tailor-made for mid-career healthcare professionals with an interest in cardiology who want to become managers and leaders with broad societal and economic perspectives.

This programme is organised in partnership with the European Heart Academy; an organisation that trains the future leaders in cardiovascular medicine. In collaboration with selected excellent universities, the academy provides the ultimate cardiovascular degrees.

Complexity in healthcare

The healthcare sector is complex in the sense that many different stakeholders interact in a rapidly changing context. For example, patients are more and more empowered through easier access to information on health, doctors and nurses need responses to advances in new technologies that might fundamentally change how they prevent, diagnose and cure diseases, insurance companies influence procedures through how they finance and regulatory bodies shape what is possible and what is not. To be a leader in this context requires the ability to recognise diverse stakeholders, spot emerging new realities and navigate the often paradoxical impact these developments have on the organisation. This programme equips participants with exactly that.

It is unique because it not only provides participants with different evidence-based perspectives on management and leadership in this context but also helps participants translate these to their own personal leader role. In that way, the knowledge and experience gained becomes immediately actionable in their own work context.”

Focus on Sustainability Key Element in MaastrichtMBA

MBA programmes usually pay a lot of attention to the ‘P’ of ‘Profit’. The MaastrichtMBA programme goes one step further and has integrated a strong focus on the P’s of ‘Planet’ and ‘People’ in the curriculum. “This way, the education programme is more balanced, and our students can contribute to a better climate and to other social challenges we face,” says MBA Captain Dr. Boris Blumberg. Accordingly, MaastrichtMBA programme recently managed to rank second worldwide in the Corporate Knights Better World MBA ranking 2021.

Social entrepreneurship

The education of the MaastrichtMBA programme is aimed at making students aware of their responsibility as individuals, from the perspective of the organisation for which they work and with a view to the outside world. This is expressed, for example, through the contributions of Dr. Jarrod Ormiston, who specialises in Social Entrepreneurship. “We encourage our students to think about how they can contribute to solving all kinds of social issues through sustainable and innovative entrepreneurship. For example, how can refugees contribute to our society?”, says Ormiston. “We do not only look at the hard business, but also have an eye for the ‘soft’ side of these types of processes.”

Euros and Ethics

“I always say: creating value is so much more than just making money,” says Harry Hummels, professor of Ethics, Organisation and Society and respected member of the MaastrichtMBA teaching faculty. “I take great pleasure in confronting students with ethical and moral aspects of sustainable investing. Ultimately, it is about the quality of our lives now, and that of the generations after us. If we want to handle our accumulated capital with care, but also dare to delve into what exactly well-being entails and what we are willing to pay for it, we can also contribute to a better world in that way.”

Sustainable business models

The state of the natural environment was also discussed extensively at the recent Glasgow Conference. How can we stimulate companies to contribute to a circular economy, in which products last as long as possible, in which as little waste as possible is produced, in which products are reusable, raw material waste is prevented and waste can be reused as a raw material. “This is not only good for the environment, but also for the economy,” says Professor Nancy Bocken, who introduces her MBA students to the Sustainable Business field through her teaching and research. “In addition to efficiencies that save cost and resources simultaneously, we also need to slow and close resource loops, and focus on regenerating damaged ecosystems through new sustainable business models. Our MBA students are trained to work with these challenges in their respective organisations.”

Second place for MaastrichtMBA in Corporate Knights’ 2021 Better World MBA ranking

We are proud to announce that MaastrichtMBA – the executive MBA programme of Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE) – ranks an impressive second in a global list of MBA programmes that embrace sustainable development. The runner-up position in Corporate Knights’ newly published 2021 Better World MBA ranking was granted to MaastrichtMBA and SBE due to their conscious alignment of course line-up and faculty research along the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainability showcase for top business schools

Corporate Knights is a leading sustainable business publication platform with a focus on how organisations, markets and governments are advancing social and environmental sustainability worldwide. Their 2021 Better World MBA compared 147 globally renowned business schools and MBA programmes across key performance indicators related to sustainable development. “Every MBA programme in the world should be instilling holistic purpose in leaders, ensuring they have the skills, tools and values to build a more inclusive, healthier economy that’s beneficial to society and in harmony with the natural world, and the Better World business schools are leading the way,” said Toby Heaps, CEO of Corporate Knights.

Significant sign of quality

For the MaastrichtMBA programme, this high ranking by Corporate Knights provides a valuable benchmark towards prospective participants regarding the quality of education and reflects an ongoing demand from talented professionals and their organisations to create meaningful impact in the workplace and beyond. As part of SBE, MaastrichtMBA is also accredited by the leading international quality assurance bodies (AACSB | EQUIS | AMBA), which is another quality seal that confirms the highest level of research and education.

Seminar Trends in Toezicht 2021

This autumn, the first edition of the Dutch seminar “Trends in Toezicht” (trends in supervision) took place. The central theme was “The supervisor in a flexible organisation”. Each speaker fleshed out this theme from his or her own perspective.

Led by Rob van de Wiel, general director of MECC Maastricht, we were taken through the enormous hectic of the past Corona year. How agile are you as an organisation and what does this mean for a supervisor? Inspiring break-out sessions, followed with a nice networking reception at the end.

Hans Hoek (C3 Adviseurs en Managers) discussed the agility of partnerships. The central question was what regulators can ask for the flexibility and robustness of partnerships, and what they themselves can contribute to this. He emphasised the importance of preventing gut reactions, the hobbyism of managers and stimulating a social view.

Johan Sinnema and Bas van der Velde (Rieken Oomen/Rijnconsult) interactively addressed the subject of agile leadership. What does adaptive leadership mean for the Supervisory Board and the relationship with management? Various important aspects of supervision were addressed, including the way of decision-making, cooperation, entering into relationships, switching speed and the use of diversity.

Finally, Maurice Franssen (Orgfit) addressed the subject of agile organisation. One of his questions was whether we want to design organisations based on new insights, or whether we prefer to stay true to classical design principles. Besides pointing out the strengths and pitfalls of various models, he emphasised the importance of consistency and of managing paradoxes with regard to issues such as centralisation vs. decentralisation and self-management vs. hierarchy. Of course, he also addressed the role of supervisors in organisational design.

The seminar took place in the renovated MECC Maastricht, a beautiful venue with a surprising new restaurant, and was made possible by UMIO | Maastricht University, Supervision Limburg, Bestuurderscentrum, Orgfit, C3 Adviseurs en Managers, Rieken Oomen/Rijnconsult and HRTouchpoints. The invitees were supervisors and managers who regularly attend our masterclasses and training courses and would like to stay informed about relevant developments in “the world of supervision”. Based on the positive feedback, we are already looking forward to organising the next edition in 2022!

Academic alliance offers joint training for healthcare professionals

On 1 November, 24 healthcare professionals and executives from Maastricht UMC+ and Radboudumc started an intensive one-year programme to realise the strategic objectives of their organisations and to jointly build future-proof healthcare in the Netherlands. The programme was set up in close collaboration with Radboud Management Academy and UMIO | Maastricht University and is in line with the ambitions of the Academic Alliance.

Hospitals have a great responsibility for their patients and for their staff. Something that the coronapandemic has emphasised even more. Under pressure from social developments, they must increasingly prove and distinguish themselves with regard to the quality of care, the availability of care and the quality of work. It is important that managers have the ability to reflect on developments from various perspectives and that they can make adjustments if necessary. Learning from each other beyond the borders of one’s own organisation is indispensable for successful innovation and cooperation.

Stronger together than alone

This autumn, Maastricht UMC+ and Radboudumc started a joint training programme for a core group of healthcare professionals in which perspectives from (socio-organisational) business administration and leadership are used to deal with complexity. The programme is aimed at medical specialists in leadership roles, leaders of centres, care pathways, departments and research institutes, nurse leaders, managers of support services and young talent with the potential to progress to a leadership role. This mixed company makes it possible to learn from each other across functions, levels and organisations.

“That is exactly what we are aiming for with the Academic Alliance: to share knowledge and expertise with each other in order to face the common social challenges.”

Dr Helen Mertens – Maastricht UMC+ Board Chair

Future-proof

The content of the programme was designed in consultation with representatives of both umbrella organisations. Content and guidance was provided by Radboud Management Academy and UMIO | Maastricht University. Both organisations have extensive experience in supporting professionals in dealing with complex issues and future-proofing their organisations.

“As umc’s we have the responsibility to make healthcare more sustainable and future-proof. This new training for our professionals definitely contributes to this and I am confident that we will benefit from it in the future.”

Bertine Lahuis – Radboudumc Board Chair

They found the perfect partners in Brightlands, connected to AI-hub Brightlands, Fontys Venlo and UMIO | Maastricht University. Various modules will be offered, during twelve full-time course days, which are aligned with practice: from ideation to business case and applicable AI methods and technics. Participants and employers will be connected, which will lead to synergies to create and develop new AI opportunities.

Candidate profile

Brightlands AI Academy’s programme focuses on HBO and WO educated professionals with an inquisitive, creative and entrepreneurial mindset; strongly communicators who want to make a difference within their organisation by using data to innovate on processes and business models. Preferably, participants have a science education background including mathematics, business informatics, information management, econometrics, computer science, statistics and physics. The first academy cohort will start in October, with a maximum of 20 participants.

Workshops

Brightlands AI Academy organises three introductory workshops, the first of which took place on June 23. MBA Accreditation: All you need to know

There are a number of national and international bodies that offer MBA accreditations. But which are the most prestigious? And why is an MBA accreditation important? Together with MBAGRADSCHOOLS we explored the world of MBA accreditations which is a way of independently verifying the quality of business education.

What is MBA accreditation and why is it important?

Universities, business schools, and MBA programmes can all receive accreditation from national and international organisations. An MBA accreditation is a way of independently verifying the quality of business education.

Although MBA rankings can also give us an idea of the quality of a school or programme, MBA accreditation is a seal of approval from an external organisation. Each one has its own criteria and set of standards, so achieving accreditation from multiple organisations can be valuable for a university. Prof. Dr. Mariëlle Heijltjes, Executive Director of UMIO | Maastricht University, certainly believes this is the case.

“The relevance of these accreditations for a programme is that they give you an objective measure of quality… by having all these accreditations combined, I think we have a very fair outside assessment that we deliver the highest quality for a student enrolling in the programme,” she says in this video on maastrichtmba.com.

Her colleague, Dr. Boris Blumberg, MBA Captain at UMIO | Maastricht University, went on to explain the benefits of accreditation for students: “The accreditation value for students is that they receive high-quality research and education, and also a world-recognised diploma.”

MaastrichtMBA among the world’s best sustainable MBAs

UMIO’s MaastrichtMBA programme moves up the grade on sustainable development as it impressively managed to rank 16th globally in the newly published 2020 Better World MBA Ranking organised by Corporate Knights. With this position, Maastricht University School of Business and Economics also tops the chart of Dutch business schools in a longlist of 150 internationally ranked and accredited institutes worldwide.

Sustainability showcase for top business schools

The 2020 Corporate Knights Better World MBA Ranking evaluates 150 business schools, drawn from the 2019 Financial Times list of Top 100 Global MBA programmes, every programme that made 2019 Better World’s top-40 roster and business schools accredited by AMBA, AACSB or EQUIS that opt-in for evaluation.

From this pool, programmes are evaluated across sustainability-focused articles and citations, courses that incorporate sustainable development topics, research institutes and centres devoted to sustainable development issues, and faculty gender as well as racial diversity. As such, the Corporate Knights’ ranking provides prospective students with a good reference to the scope and scale of education and research in these areas, which are becoming more and more important to design a bright future for current and future generations in business and society.

About Corporate Knights

Founded in 2002, Corporate Knights Inc. includes the sustainable business magazine ‘Corporate Knights’ and a research division that produces rankings and financial product ratings based on corporate sustainability performance, including the ‘Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World’. Corporate Knights was named ‘Magazine of the Year’ in 2013 and won the ‘SABEW Canada Silver Award for Investigative Reporting’ in 2019.

‘Triple Crown’ accreditation

Apart from MaastrichtMBA’s appearance in global rankings, the programme – as part of UMIO and Maastricht University School of Business and Economics – is also accredited by the three leading international quality assurance bodies: AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA. This ‘Triple Crown’ accreditation represents an objective quality stamp that only 1% of all business schools worldwide are allowed to use.

UMIO designs and provides leadership training of DAS-CAM programme

One of the key needs identified by the European Society of Cardiology is the training of future leaders in arrhythmia management and research. For this purpose, the educational programme ‘Diploma of Advanced Studies in Cardiac Arrhythmia Management’ (DAS-CAM) has been established. UMIO designs and facilitates the Leadership Development Trajectory that is part of several modules of this two-year programme. At the end of January, the participants gathered in Brussels for module 5 on ventricular tachycardia.

The DAS-CAM programme is a joint collaboration between Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC+), European Heart Academy (EHA) and the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA). This unique course trains future leaders in arrhythmology from all over the world to deliver state-of the-art cardiovascular services.

Excel as a leader

In addition to substantive training in cardiac arrhythmia management, the cardiologists and electrophysiologists also learn how to excel in a managerial position. This is done through a Leadership Development Trajectory designed by UMIO and facilitated by Prof. Dr. Marielle Heijltjes, Prof. Dr. Piet Eichholtz, Martin Lammers, Prof. Dr. Jan Cobbenhagen, Prof. Dr. Simon de Jong and former colleagues of SBE, Prof. Dr. Hein Schreuder and Prof. Dr. Anneloes Raes.

At the end of January, the module on ventricular tachycardia took place in Brussels. On behalf of UMIO, Prof. Dr. Simon de Jong and Prof. Dr. Anneloes Raes provided the leadership sessions of this module.

The current group of 32 participants is the second batch since the start of the DAS-CAM programme. Their first module took place in February 2019 and their eighth and last module will take place in October this year.
